Overnight Saint Louis tour

If Dakar makes you want to visit Paris, SAINT LOUIS, Senegal makes you want to go to New Orleans or the Caribbean with its French influence and wood balconies lining the narrow streets. However, SAINT LOUIS has been classified by UNESCO on the World Heritage list since the year 2000. It is also known as the African door to French colonization.
A 4-hour drive North of Dakar takes us to the old city of Saint Louis. Founded in 1659, SAINT LOUIS is the oldest city to be created by the Europeans on the Western coast of Africa under the leadership of the French. It was the former Headquarters of the French colonial power from 1895 to 1902. Then, Dakar replaced Saint Louis as the Capital of French West Africa from 1902 until independence in1960.
A comprehensive guided city tour on a horse-drawn carriage will help you explore some of the city's best-known architectural landmarks including the Faidherbe bridge, an architectural jewel built by the same architect who built the Eiffel Tower, the old fishing village of Guet Ndar with its fish market, the oldest Cathedral in Senegal dating in 1828, the Governor's Palace, the grand mosque...
You cannot take a single step in the streets of SAINT LOUIS without being reminded of the French presence in this proud African city.

FADIOUTH: The shell experience

A 2-hour drive from Dakar takes us to the city of JOAL. The city is famous as the birthplace of the first President of Senegal late Leopold Sedar Senghor. One of the highlights of your visit to Joal is FADIOUTH, separated from Joal by a footbridge. FADIOUTH is unusual for the lifestyle of its inhabitants and the isolation of the settlement. About 95% of the island's population is Christian in a national population that is less than 5% Christian. There is a strong Christian influence that was established because of early missionary contacts and that contributes to its unique atmosphere. However, there is also a minority Moslem community. One of the characteristics of FADIOUTH island is that all houses are made of seashells and pounded shells are used as cement. People live and work on the island made entirely of seashells accumulated over many centuries.

There is a small tiny catholic mission run by Nuns and a cemetery built on a huge shell mound. However, its grain storage, calm waters and, black pigs roaming around free, make this island of the most picturesque spots in SENEGAL.
